The makers of Vishal’s next Irumbu Thirai have announced that the film will hit the screens on January 12, 2018, in time for Pongal holidays. This sets up an interesting clash between Suriya’s Thaana Serndha Kootam and Irumbu Thirai, as the former is expected to hit the screens during Pongal as well. As of now only these two movies are scheduled for release during Pongal, a big holiday for Kollywood. Coincidentally, Vishal’s Mollywood debut Villain (also starring Mollywood superstar Mohanlal), is expected to lock horns with another biggie Vijay’s Mersal in Kerala, a big market for Vijay. Mersal and Villain are expected to hit the silver screen during Diwali.
Irumbu Thirai is an action thriller that also stars Action King Arjun and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. While Vishal’s friend Arya was the first choice to play the villain, he later backed out saying that playing a negative role in Tamil at this time of his career may not be a good idea. Irumbu Thirai is directed by newcomer Mithran and produced by Vishal Film Factory. Vishal is touted to play an army officer in the movie which revolves around digital crimes. The music for the movie has been scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
On the other hand, Thaana Serndha Koottam has a solid star cast comprising Keerthy Suresh, Suresh Menon, Thambi Ramaiah and Ramya Krishnan among others. Directed by Vignesh Shivn, the film has music by Anirudh Ravichander. It is bankrolled by Studio Green and 2 D Entertainment. Incidentally, this is Suriya’s 35th film. It also marks the return of legendary comedian Senthil in Tamil cinema after a long hiatus.
