Festival days in these parts, especially Deepavali, Pongal and Tamil New Year, are associated with new releases in theatres. With Pongal around the corner, there is an interesting line-up of movies this time too.
Though the initial list of releases was eight for Pongal 2018, it has now come down to three. But all the three are interesting and promising- Suriya’s ‘Thaanaa Serndha Koottam’, Vikram’s ‘Sketch’ and Prabhu Deva’s ‘Gulebaghavali’.
THAANA SERNTHA KOOTAM
It is a heist comedy film written and directed by Vignesh Shivan and produced by K E Gnanavel Raja. Based on Bollywood flick ‘Special 26’ (2013), the film stars Suriya and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles, with a supporting cast including Karthik, Ramya Krishnan, Senthil and Suresh Chandra Menon.
Featuring music composed by Anirudh Ravichander and cinematography by Dinesh Krishnan, the film has garnered huge pre-release buzz.
Talking about the movie, Suriya says, “It has a mix of everything, and it’s not just anger and action like some of my previous films. It’s a relief when you don’t have to be Mr. Perfect all the time. That gets boring after a point.”
Praising Vignesh Shivan, he says, “He was clear that he wanted to make a retro-classic. To be frank, he’s is the only director who told me, ‘Sir, I know you are a big actor, who has several big budget films to your credit, and have a big market to cater to, but we are trying to do something different here’.”
‘Sketch’ is an action thriller film, written and directed by Vijay Chandar and produced by Moving Frame. The film features Vikram and Tamannaah in the leading roles, with Soori, Vishwanath and R K Suresh among others portraying supporting roles.
The film, it is learnt, presents Vada Chennai (North Chennai), which is otherwise shown rural and rustic in films, in a more sophisticated manner.
To be released by Kalaipuli S Thanu, Vikram plays a North Chennai rogue in the film and Tamannaah plays his romantic interest.
Says Vikram, “It is commercial but not a masala film with lots of mass elements. If ‘Sketch’ were to be made without me, it would be a regular masala movie with a very nice storyline, but I told the makers to make it more sensitive and raw.”
He adds: “So it has gloss, but it is raw! My co-star Tamannaah and I are very normal. Even the romance between us will not be glitzy but real with which the audience can relate.”
It is an action comedy film, written and directed by Kalyaan and produced by KJR Studios. The movie features Prabhu Deva and Hansika Motwani in the leading roles, with Revathi, Ramdoss and Yogi Babu among others portraying supporting roles.
Says the director, “It is a fun film with Prabhu Deva playing the role of an innocent person. Hansika dons the role of a pub dancer.”
He adds: “A breezy entertainer, I am confident that ‘Gulebaghavali’ would be loved by the audience. Comedy, romance and action would be presented in the right mix.”
Hansika says, “I play a con artist and thief and it’s a special film for me. Prabhu sir gave me the memorable film Engeyum Kadhal early in my K’town career. And he was the producer of yet another hit of mine Bogan. And I am excited to play alongside him in Gulebaghavali.”
