Bala is a director who has always been synonymous with gut wrenching films which are also equally disturbing. But for a change now, he has opted for a comparatively positive film that has it’s intent in the right direction. Naachiyaar is a crisp, no-nonsense film that puts across it’s message beautifully without overdoing it.

Almost everything works in Naachiyaar, because of it’s short run-time which doesn’t allow any unnecessary load to get in. With a hard-and-fast approach, what starts off with some comic sequences quickly transforms into an engaging suspense story. There might be some gore in it yes, but everything is under control. Naachiyaar doesn’t feel like a Bala film at places too, and that’s being said in a good way.

When it comes to performances, Jyotika shifts into a cape which hasn’t worn before, playing a ruthless cop at work and a caring woman at home. After her apt show, it’s GV Prakash who surprises one and all with his best performance in his career yet. In a totally new getup, he shines in both the emotional and the comic scenes along with newcomer Ivana who’s a great find. There’s even the likes of producer Rockline Venkatesh who gets a good supporting role and does it well.

Technically good enough with just the right music from Ilaiyaraaja, Naachiyaar works as a worthy thriller from Bala with it’s human values packed in nicely. Go see it for it gives us an important message which is the need of the hour, in a short and sweet way.
