Crime thrillers are a space in Indian cinema that have been done to death, so it becomes really hard for a director to come up with something new and interesting that actually keeps the audience pinned. Nevertheless, director Dharanidharan’s Raja Ranguski is a watchable whodunit that manages to engage you despite the flaws.
The film follows a murder mystery entangled in a love track that takes place between Shirish and Chandhini. The film’s main progression cycle lies on a male voice which constantly keeps speaking to Shirish on the phone, warning him of his upcoming actions. There are a lot of ambiguous mystery elements that Dharanidharan maintains in his narration, which at times tire you out of clarity, but that seems to be a pre-requisite when you arrive at the climax. The final 20 minutes of Raja Ranguski are its best bet, and work in a favorable way to the full picture.
Though Shirish’s role requires him to play it low, and the actor has done what’s required, the rest of the cops don’t come to the party. The female actors in Chandhini and Anupama hold good roles, and execute it with strength.
Technically, Raja Ranguski scores well with good cinematography by Yuvaa. For a film shot in 25 days, the logistics and sets required have been worked out well. Yuvan’s music truly comes in as a big advantage to the film, elevating the scenes with rousing cues. It’s awesome how he provides support to these small films and makes the theater experience more worthy.
