The horror comedy trend in Tamil cinema is back alive with Santhanam’s Dhilluku Dhuddu 2, the sequel to his hit venture that came out few years ago. Thankfully, the sequel is better than the first with the comedy being wholly split out and not just limited to the climax alone. The film turns out to be a jolly time pass horror comedy that works for most parts, despite a few rough patches.

The story of Dhilluku Dhuddu 2 might be a familiar one, with its backdrop set in Kerala this time. However, it is the combination of Santhanam and Mottai Rajendran who take the film on their shoulders and make it a fun ride. What works best here are the sequences involving the two, be it the comics at the start, Baahubali troll or the spooky fun inside the haunted house. While Santhanam is so good with his wisecracks that are exclusive to him, Rajendran makes you laugh with just his body language and reactions. While the first half is packed with slapstick comics all round, it is in the second half that the ghosts come into play in full force. The final 30 minute stretch is the film’s biggest strength with plenty of laughs stitched in.

It’s great to see Santhanam back in a role that he would fit perfectly. His new bearded look works nicely on him, and his timing and rhyming ripostes are on point here. However, it is not wrong to ask for more episodes between Santhanam and the ghosts, as that is the highlight of the franchise as he directly trolls them with a casual attitude.

The film has decent production values with adequate work from the technical and the musical team. The art work inside the haunted house is neatly done and gives the film what it needs.

Overall, Dhilluku Dhuddu 2 is a fine time pass entertainer that doesn’t tire you, with Santhanam and Mottai Rajendran being the positives. There are a few flaws like the god-men angle which could have been avoided, but the two-hour runtime acts as an advantage and makes it a good watch on the whole.
