When it comes to Gorilla, all the attention right from the start has been on the chimp, which has indeed been the major crowd puller for the film. It was always interesting to see a creature being featured in a heist drama, and it got all the more interesting with it being a chimpanzee helping out in the process. But when it comes down to the actual end result of the film, we understand that the intent of the film is much more than the chimp alone, and that could be both a good and a bad thing.
Gorilla starts off by telling us how Jiiva and his friends befriend the chimp and make it their pet, who stays at home with them. The story then shifts to how the friends are troubled by their situations in life, and then decide to rob a bank to save themselves from the situation. Gorilla then travels on a slightly wavered route to bring itself to the breaking point, only to give way to a social issue which tries to make the film more accessible. Here, the chimp stays away from being the central attraction, as the proceedings are quite interesting on their own. The team has kept it in mind to save up some good scenes for the chimp, but looking at it up straight, the film is quite decent even without it.
What could have made Gorilla better is some fine-tuning in the writing stage, especially in the comic sequences which have some inane and indecent humor at places. However, it is the constantly blowing entertainment value that holds the film in place.
Jiiva does neatly in the role that is required of him, with good company from Sathish and Yogi Babu. Shalini Pandey as the heroine is adequate with the rest of the cast offering able support. Technically, Gorilla is good enough with Sam CS’ music rising up to the occasion with some riveting themes.
Overall, Gorilla is an entertainer that could have been way better but at the moment, it is a fairly engaging drama that is made for the casual moviegoer.
