Kollywood’s animal instinct – F’day Spl. article by Naveen

From Thevar Films to Ramanarayanan, Tamil cinema had always given importance to animals and they were featured as key characters in many movies. But the recent animal welfare rules stopped filmmakers from using animals in flicks in the past some years.

However, thanks to the development in technology, the trend is now catching up once again. Here is a list of some upcoming films which give prominence to animals.

Starring Jiiva in the lead role, the movie is taking shape fast. According to the film’s team, for the first time in the history of Indian cinema, a chimpanzee is playing an important role in this film.

It is learnt a chimp from the Samut Training Station in Thailand has been roped in to play the role. The movie is said to be a heist comedy about a group of people trying to loot a bank with the help of a chimpanzee.

Being directed by Don Sandy, ‘Gorilla’ also stars Shalini Pandey, Radha Ravi, Sathish, Muniskanth, Yogi Babu and Mottai Rajendran.

The first look poster of ‘Kaala’ featured Superstar Rajinikanth with a dog. Sources say the dog has significance in the movie and as per the script, it is the pet of the protagonist (Rajini).

It may be recalled that Rajinikanth had acted with animals including elephant in his earlier movies and snakes used to be an integral character in some of his films.

Directed by Pa Ranjith, ‘Kaala’ is being produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films. Music is by Santhosh Narayanan, while the movie has Eswari Rao, Samuthirakani and Nana Patekar in key roles.

Sarath Kumar and director A Venkatesh, who had earlier worked together in films like ‘Aai’, ‘Mahaprabhu’, ‘Chanakya’ and ‘Sandamarutham’, have joined hands once again for ‘Paamban’.

Sarath Kumar was seen as a snake charmer in the posters of the movie, which generated a buzz. The film also has his daughter Varalakshmi in a key role and this is their first venture together.

Talking about the movie, Sarath said, “It will be a one-of-a-kind project with commercial elements. I play a young, dynamic guy, and there’s also a reason why I’m seen as a snake charmer in the posters.”

While the first look poster of ‘Seema Raja’ had Sivakarthikeyan sitting on a horse, there is a buzz that the film has a cheetah in a key role.

It is said that there are two Sivakarthikeyans in this film directed by Ponram and one of them will be seen with the cheetah. “Horse also has significance in the movie,” sources said.

Shooting for the flick was completed recently. Samantha plays heroine in ‘Seema Raja’, which has music by D Imman. It is said to be a fun-filled family entertainer.

‘Neeya’ was a memorable movie of Kollywood decades ago and a sequel is being planned now. Jai plays an IT guy in this flick and the story revolves around snakes.

‘Neeya 2’ features three beautiful actresses- Raai Laxmi, Catherine Tresa and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar- as heroines. Produced by Jumbo Cinemas A Sridhar, the film is being directed by L Suresh of ‘Eththan’ fame.

The first schedule of the film was shot in hilly locales of Talakonam and Chalakudi. A few scenes were also shot in Chennai and Madurai.
